What commercial cabinetry and millwork covers

Millwork is the built-in woodwork that gives a commercial space much of its function and character: reception desks, built-in storage, credenzas, display fixtures, cash wraps and back bars. Cabinetry is the casework under and above the counters in break rooms, pantries, workrooms and restrooms.

We cover both sides, along with the tops that go on them:

  • Custom millwork built in our own shop to your drawings or your designer's.
  • Cabinet supply and installation from the lines we carry. Browse our cabinet brands.
  • Countertops templated, CNC-cut and installed by our own fabrication shop.

How we run it

Millwork is built in our own shop and installed by our team, so the people who build a reception desk are the people who set it. Questions about dimensions, fitting to out-of-square walls and countertop overhangs stay inside one team instead of passing between a fabricator, an installer and a stone shop.

On a full tenant build-out, millwork is sequenced with framing, power and finishes under the same contract. It can also be priced as a stand-alone package for an owner, tenant or general contractor.

Planning considerations

Custom or stock

Stock and semi-custom lines are efficient for repetitive runs. Custom millwork earns its cost where a piece is highly visible, sits in an irregular space, or carries the brand. Deciding which pieces are which early keeps the budget where it shows.

Blocking and utilities

Reception desks and credenzas need power and data; wall-hung displays and wall cabinets need blocking inside the wall. Locate both before drywall, so nothing has to be opened up later.

Accessible counters

Public-facing counters, such as reception desks and checkout counters, have accessibility requirements under the ADA Standards and the building code. Under the 2010 ADA Standards, part of a sales or service counter generally has to be no higher than 36 inches. Your design professional sets the dimensions; we build to them and flag any conflicts we see in the drawings.

Durability in heavy use

Commercial casework sees more use than cabinets at home. Edges, toe kicks, hinges and drawer slides take the wear. Talk through materials, edge treatment and hardware for the busiest areas when you make selections.

Lead times

Cabinet lines and shop-built pieces each have their own lead times. Settling selections early keeps them from setting the finish date.

What we need to quote

  • Drawings or elevations of each piece
  • Finish schedule and hardware spec
  • Countertop material, if the pieces have tops
  • Site address, floor and access details
  • Target installation date

Common questions

Something we did not cover? Call (540) 305-0431 or send us the scope.

Do you build millwork from an architect's drawings?

Yes. Send the drawings and finish schedule. We review the details, raise questions about dimensions, materials or hardware before anything is built, and confirm the final details with you or your designer before fabrication starts.

When should we use custom millwork instead of stock cabinet lines?

Stock and semi-custom cabinet lines are cost-effective for standard runs, such as break room base and wall cabinets. Custom millwork makes sense when a piece has to fit an irregular space, carry a specific design, or anchor the room, like a reception desk or a retail display wall. Many projects mix both, and we price them that way.

Will custom millwork match the finish on our cabinets?

Not always exactly. A cabinet line's factory finish and a custom-built piece are made differently, so color and sheen can vary. If the two sit side by side, review samples of both together before ordering, or choose a deliberate contrast.

Can you supply and install cabinets across several floors or suites?

Repeated layouts are priced from the drawings like any other job. The cabinet line's lead time, the quantities and your schedule decide how delivery and installation are sequenced, so we review those with you before committing to dates.

Can we see cabinet and countertop options before we specify?

Yes. Door styles, finishes and countertop materials are on display at our showrooms in Tysons, Manassas and Front Royal. Book a visit so someone is available to walk through the options with you.
